Read one piece
I stumbled across an article on Observer (US), written by Kris Ruby, CEO of Ruby Media Group and on air TV contributor discussing 10 signs not to hire a publicist (or PR consultant).
Ruby talks about and I quote:
“the ton of articles floating around about why you should hire a PR firm “
This is the flip side. I must admit, Ruby’s thoughts are spot on.
There are many sides to PR. I defend in the court of public opinion.
This article focuses on ten reasons not to hire a Publicist. And, her reasons are the same for consultant-client.
I don’t wish to turn down potential clients or pigeon-hole myself. But, I believe expectations must be clear from the start.
Needless to say, I wanted to share this. And, I urge reading one piece first:
Some key points to take away:
- There are no instant results
- PR needs daily engagement. One phone or email a week will not cut it
- Public Relations is not sales. Investing in PR is not a quick fire way for new business
- You must be willing to drop everything if the media picks up a story.
Having worked in the industry for over 10 years’, I can quickly assess what makes a good fit. PR is not for everyone. It is time heavy and takes a needs a lot of energy from the client as well as the consultant.
